Trying to decide between the Trang An and Tam Coc boat tours in Ninh Binh? You’re not alone—this is one of the most common dilemmas travellers face when planning a visit to this stunning part of northern Vietnam. Both options promise serene rivers, dramatic limestone karsts, and lush rice paddies—but the experiences are surprisingly different once you’re in the boat.

After spending four days exploring Ninh Binh in October 2024, I had the chance to experience the region’s beauty firsthand. These boat rides aren’t just tourist attractions—they’re a must-do activity that showcase why this area is often called “Halong Bay on land.” But working out which tour suits your travel style, time, and expectations can be confusing. Some guides promote one over the other, and online reviews are full of mixed opinions.

The scenery on the Trang An boat trip is perfect for photos

In this post, I’ll break down the key differences between the Trang An and Tam Coc boat tours based on real experience—so you can choose the one that’s right for you (or even decide if both are worth your time!). Let’s help you paddle in the right direction.

Is is worth taking a boat ride in Ninh Binh?

The boat rides at Ninh Binh are absolutely worth it, and probably the best thing to do in this incredible area. The scenic boat rides wind through towering limestone karsts, creating a mesmerizing journey through this natural wonderland. They offer you the opportunity to get out into the limestone hills that the area is famous for without doing any hiking – instead, you’ll float gently past stunning rock formations and through epic caves. While I’ve done other boat rides in Vietnam, including in the serene Mekong Delta, the famous coconut and lantern boats in Hoi An and along the Perfume River in Hue, none match these boat rides for beauty or the dramatic landscape.

Traditional Vietnamese rowboats with passengers in conical hats float near a stone bridge on a calm river, surrounded by lush green karst mountains in Trang An, Ninh Binh. The boats are shaded with umbrellas, creating a peaceful, scenic atmosphere.
The boats at Trang An can be difficult to get in and out of, but it’s worth it

While there are lots of other amazing things to do in Ninh Binh, if you are short on time I recommend prioritising the boat rides.

There are two boat options around Ninh Binh, and it can be hard to know which to pick. In this guide, I’ll talk you through whether you should choose the Trang An or the Tam Coc boat tour.

Quick summary -which should you choose?

Trang An is better for variety and professionalism; Tam Coc is faster and more convenient if you’re short on time.

If you want to visit Trang An and other sights in Ninh Binh, but you’re worried about timings, consider this incredibly highly rated guided tour. It’ll take you to the famous scenic viewpoint at the top of the Mua Caves, as well as to the Hoa Lu archeological site and Bai Dinh Pagoda all in one day, helping you to maximise your time.

Boat tour at Trang An – multiple routes and longer duration

Cost: 250k VND

Important information: the boats are uncovered but umbrellas are provided to shade you from the sun (and rain, if it starts). There are toilets at the Temple/Pagoda stops on each route.

Getting there: Trang An is about a 20-minute drive from Tam Coc, with a one-way Grab ride costing around £5/$6.

While Trang An as a town is much quieter than Tam Coc, the boat ride area feels very well set up as a tourist destination, with lots of information available.

A small traditional temple with red-tiled roofing and stone pillars stands surrounded by dense green foliage. The altar inside is adorned with red and gold decorations, while trees and vines grow around the structure, blending it into nature.
Pagoda on the Trang An boat ride

Once you’ve bought a ticket, you proceed into a tunnel under the road, which takes you to the boat dock area. You’ll then tell the attendant which route you want, and they’ll direct you to the right boat. If you are a group of 1 or 2, you will have to share a boat with another group. Boats take up to 4, so if you’re a group of 3 you might get your own boat unless there is a solo traveller about.

The different routes at the Trang An boat ride

There are three routes to choose from at Trang An, and as you are buying your ticket there is information on the differences between the three routes. There’s also a separate information stand where you can ask questions.

RouteWhat you seeTimeWhy
Route 19 caves and 3 templesApprox. 3-4 hoursLikely to be quieter
Route 24 caves and 3 templesApprox. 2-3 hoursBest if short on time
Route 33 caves and 3 temples, including famous Dot cave which is 1km longApprox. 3 hoursMost popular

I chose route 3, and would highly recommend it. The journey lasted about 3 hours, which included stops at the various temples along the route. There are vendors selling drinks at each of the stops to help you keep hydrated, but no option to stop for longer e.g. for lunch, so bear this in mind when planning your day.

A person wearing a traditional conical hat rows a small wooden boat with bright orange life jackets through a narrow cave passage. The rocky walls are dimly lit, with a bright light shining from a hole in the cave, creating a dramatic contrast.
Boats passing through the Dot Cave on Route 3

The route is stunning, taking you through the longest cave system, as well as past the area used in the King Kong movie. This is really a must-do in Ninh Binh.

Boat tour at Tam Coc – one route, shorter duration

Cost: 250k VND

Getting there: The boat trip is in the centre of Tam Coc town, within walking distance of most hotels

Tam Coc is the main town people stay at in the region and boats depart from the centre of town. That makes this a popular option, as it’s much more convenient. The boat ride is shorter, making it a popular choice for day trips from Hanoi.

Dozens of green rowboats are docked along the peaceful Tam Cốc river, framed by leafy branches overhead. The backdrop features limestone karst mountains, traditional buildings, and tourists paddling on the water under a bright blue sky.
Tam Coc Lake in the centre of town is beautiful

While I didn’t experience Tam Coc firsthand, I’ve reviewed dozens of accounts and reviews to provide a balanced comparison.

As I didn’t take this boat trip, I can’t comment on the route. However, the lake area is stunningly beautiful and you’re not going to experience mediocre landscapes in this area.

Trang An vs Tam Coc Boat Tour: Which to Choose

Your choice will partly depend on the amount of time you have in Ninh Binh, and whether you choose to stay in Tam Coc or Trang An (more on this below). However, there are some other factors you should consider.

Timings of each boat tour

Tam Coc boat tours are shorter, which makes them particularly popular with day trips from Hanoi where groups are trying to fit a lot into one day. This is also great if you only have a short amount of time in the Ninh Binh area.

Trang An boat tours offer different durations, but in general are longer. The shortest is between 2-3 hours (depending on how long you spend at the different temples en route) and the longest can be up to 4 hours. If you’re worried about timings and have other things you want to see in Ninh Binh, consider this highly rated guided tour to help you maximise your time.

A boat rower wearing a light blue "Tràng An" uniform and a traditional pith helmet is paddling a green boat with the number "1626" on a calm river. The rower is transporting passengers wearing bright orange life jackets, one of whom is holding a white umbrella. Lush green trees and foliage line the riverbank in the background.
Many rowers at Trang have jackets with inbuilt fans to help with the heat on the long trip

Availability of tourist information

While the boats in Tam Coc are in the centre of the town, there’s no visitor centre like at Trang An. For example, there is little information offered about the area at Tam Coc, but much more available at Trang An.

The boat provided umbrellas for the sun (and rain, when it arrived!)

Scams at Tam Coc

Though I didn’t take the Tam Coc boat tour, I noticed many negative reviews, especially on Google. More importantly, I saw numerous other blogs, and even tour operators on Viator/Get your Guide referencing that the rowers will often refuse to return you to land until you’ve e.g. tipped heavily, or bought something from one of the boats on the lake selling drinks/snacks. This would obviously be an unpleasant experience, and one I chose to avoid.

In contrast, my rower at Trang An did not ask for a tip, and I understand that its actually against the rules at Trang An. We were also never hassled by vendors during the Trang An boat ride.

While you can and should tip if you feel that your rower deserves the extra, feeling extremely pressured is not a fun experience.

Summary: Trang An Vs Tam Coc Boat Tour

My recommendation is to take the Trang An boat ride unless you are very short on time. It offers better infrastructure, a choice of routes and durations, and importantly, a lack of scams.

A winding wooden boardwalk stretches over a calm, shallow lake covered with lily pads, leading towards towering, green-covered limestone mountains under a bright blue sky with scattered clouds.

Where to stay in Tam Coc

Tam Coc is a bigger, more developed town compared to Trang An, although for now it’s still very much a backpacker town. There is one main street lined with restaurants and spas, with hotels on alleys shooting off this. The road leads down to a cluster of restaurants around the lake.

Avoid staying directly on the main street in Tam Coc, as it’s noisy not just from bars but from buses passing through. Look for a hotel slightly away from the main action. There are also some lovely hotels a bit further out of town, but be aware that there is no Grab motorbike in Ninh Binh. If you stay further out, you’ll need to either rent a motorbike, cycle into the main town or take a relatively expensive Grab car.

Hotel options:

  • Tam Coc Mandala hotel – about 5 minutes walk from the main road, this small budget hotel is clean, well designed and has a lovely pool. This is where I stayed and I can highly recommend it. The owner is friendly and helpful, and it offers a great breakfast, all in a quiet location.
  • Banana Tree Hostel – this thriving hostel is one of the few properties directly on the lake at Tam Coc. While I’m not a hostel person, if you are it’s worth considering this hostel for the pool with lake views and social vibes.
  • Tam Coc Moutain Sunset and Garden Hotel – for a slightly more luxurious stay, try this highly rated hotel. It’s situated off the busy main road but not far from the centre of town, and has an indoor pool.

Where to stay in Trang An

Trang An is much smaller and more spread out, and less easy to navigate on foot. The main area with hotels/homestays is not by the boat lake. If you’re planning to stay in Trang An, you’ll need to rent motorbikes or bikes to get around. You could also take Grab, but this is likely to be less frequent/easy to get than in Tam Coc as the area is more spread out. The hotels below are highly rated and a bit more in the main village of Trang An:

Frequently asked questions

How much do the Trang An and Tam Coc boat tours cost?

Both the Trang An and Tam Coc boat tours cost 250K VND. However, there are additional costs to consider. For Trang An, it is likely that you will have to pay for transport to and from the boats, whether via Grab taxi, traditional taxi, or renting a motorbike or bicycle. While there are no additional transport costs associated with Tam Coc, it is likely that you will feel obliged (if not forced) to pay more as a tip.

How long are the boat tours at Trang An and Tam Coc?

✔ The boat tour at Tam Coc is between 1.5-2 hours.
✔ The boat tour at Trang An varies on the route you take, with the shortest between 2-3 hours and the longest up to 4 hours.

Do I need to book the Trang An or Tam Coc boat ride in advance?

No, you don’t need to book the Trang An or Tam Coc boat rides in advance. You can turn up and purchase a ticket.

Is tipping expected on the Trang An or Tam Coc boat tours?

Tipping seems to be expected on the Tam Coc boat tour, according to Google Reviews, other travel blogs and Tiktok videos.

Tipping was not expected at the Trang An boat tour when I visited in October 2024. While I can’t confirm this, I have read that asking for a tip is prohibited.

What should I wear or bring for the boat tour?

What you bring for the boat tours at Trang An or Tam Coc will depend on the weather:

✔ Sun cream in the summer. While the boats are shaded by umbrellas, this might leave bits of your skin exposed to the sun. As you’re on the boat for several hours, this could lead to significant sunburn.
✔ Waterproofs if rain is forecast. Again, while there are umbrellas, they won’t fully protect you in heavy rain.
✔ Sturdy shoes or sandals – getting in and out of the boats isn’t easy. You’ll benefit from good shoes.
✔ Water – while you’ll have the opportunity to buy water at some of the stops, it’s a good idea to bring some of your own to start with.

Are the Trang An and Tam Coc boat rides suitable for kids or older travellers?

While the boat tours at Trang An and Tam Coc are well set up for tourists, getting in and out of the boats was a struggle at the different stops. This might be difficult for older travellers, or anyone with mobility issues.

The boat tours are suitable for kids, but they might get bored on the longer ones, particularly if they’re younger.

Lifejackets are required for all passengers.

Which boat tour is less touristy: Trang An or Tam Coc?

The reality is that both the Trang An and Tam Coc boat tours are very touristy. The Tam Coc tours are popular with day trips from Hanoi, and therefore might have more larger groups visiting.

When I visited Trang An, it was very busy, including with lots of domestic tourists. However, this shouldn’t stop you from doing the boat tours – they are popular for a reason, which is the stunning natural landscape around Ninh Binh.

A woman wearing sunglasses and an orange life vest poses on a wooden boat in front of towering limestone karsts along the river in Ninh Binh, Vietnam. The dramatic cliffs and calm water highlight the region’s natural beauty.

Both Trang An and Tam Coc offer unforgettable ways to explore Ninh Binh’s natural beauty—but which one you choose depends on what kind of experience you’re after. After doing the research before my visit in October 2024, I’d say Trang An is the better pick if you have the time. It’s more scenic, better organised, and overall a more peaceful ride. But if you’re short on time or want something simpler, Tam Coc still delivers. Either way, you’re in for a magical journey through one of Vietnam’s most beautiful landscapes.

    1. Hi Michela, yes, they did film parts of Kong Skull Island in Trang An, and you can still see a few bits of the sets as well (some huts, I think). While this part of the boat ride is beautiful, it’s not even the most spectacular part of the scenery in Trang An!

As far as I know, none of the movie was filmed at Tam Coc. I don’t think the Trang An boat trip is worth it if all you want to see is the movie location (it’s about 5 minutes of a 3h boat trip) but I do think the boat trip is worth it overall, I loved it!
